This article examines how social media influences changes in adolescents’ communication, with a particular
focus on how internet addiction affects emotional intelligence as an important component of interpersonal interaction. The
study involved 520 adolescents aged 18–22, and data were collected using observation, interviews, and psych diagnostic
methods. The results revealed a statistically significant negative relationship between the level of internet addiction and
emotional intelligence. In particular, a decrease in empathy and the ability to understand others’ emotions was directly
associated with excessive use of social media. The findings also show that overuse of social media limits adolescents’
real-life communication experiences and negatively affects the development of their emotional sensitivity and communication
skills. Based on the results, practical recommendations were developed to support the development of emotional
intelligence in adolescents and to promote more conscious and balanced use of social media.
