Аннотация

This article explores the theoretical and methodological foundations of pre-reading activities in teaching foreign
language reading to students of grades 10-11, focusing on the literary work “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” by Mark
Twain. Pre-reading tasks are analyzed in terms of their role in activating students’ background knowledge, reducing
cognitive load, and improving reading comprehension. The article also provides practical examples of pre-reading exercises
for literary texts, demonstrating how students can engage with new vocabulary, predict the development of the
storyline, and understand the cultural context. The results of the study highlight the effectiveness of pre-reading activities
in enhancing students’ reading skills and their overall communicative competence.
