Linguistics in Diplomatic Discourse: The Role of Language in International Relations

Diplomacy relies heavily on language as a strategic tool. Every negotiation, agreement, or official statement
is carefully crafted to persuade, mitigate conflict, and maintain mutual respect between states. This study analyzes diplomatic
discourse from a linguistic perspective, with particular attention to indirectness, politeness strategies, ambiguity,
and intercultural sensitivity. Using a qualitative approach, the research examines authentic diplomatic texts and identifies
practical implications for university-level ESL/EFL education. The findings demonstrate how linguistic strategies shape
international communication and influence diplomatic outcomes
