This article explores the critical importance and effective methodologies for integrating listening and speaking
skills within English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curricula. It argues that traditional, isolated approaches to language skills
development often fall short in preparing learners for the authentic communicative demands of their specific professional
or academic contexts. The paper examines the theoretical foundations of skills integration, emphasizing how a synergistic
approach contributes to the holistic development of communicative competence. Such integration directly enhances
learners’ ability to comprehend specific spoken discourse (e.g., lectures, negotiations, patient consultations) and respond
effectively (e.g., presenting, reporting, debating, problem-solving). Furthermore, the study highlights common challenges
in implementing skill integration, such as resource limitations, assessment complexities, and the need for systematic
teacher training.
